What's new in Via 1.6 (Part II)

In this short episode we introduce "Presets". Presets are a new functionality in Via 1.6 that allow to easily switch between different visual settings and locations to quickly highlight different aspects of a MATSim simulation.

Showcase: Evacuation Simulation due to Bushfires

What happens in case of a bushfire in the Austrialia? How do people leave the endangered area, and what is the best way to do so? Using MATSim combined with BDI agent decision making, Lin Padgham, Professor in Artificial Intelligence at RMIT University in Melbourne, and Dhirendra Singh simulate the evacuation process due to bushfires in Austrialian communites. The results of those simulation processes are then visualized with Via.

Thanks to Lin Padgham and Dhirendra Singh for providing the movie and have a sneak peek at their work!

New Versions of Via available

Since the release of Via 1.6 last fall, we've been busy updating the software further. We are thus releasing two new versions today:

Via 1.6.1

The first one is Via 1.6.1. It is just a minor update and includes several bug fixes and minor improvements to the GUI as well as improved scripting support.

Via 1.7-beta

The second one is Via 1.7-beta. Why are we releasing a beta-version of our software? MATSim underwent quite some changes in December, bringing major changes to the events, the main output of MATSim. This resulted in Via 1.6 no longer being able to visualize and analyze MATSim results generated with the latest development snapshot of MATSim. We have since adapted Via so it should again work with the changed MATSim events (as well as with older events files), but we would like to test it more thouroughly first. Still, as many of our users are using the development-version of MATSim, we want to give them a tool to visualize and analyze their results again, thus the beta version of Via.

Please note that files created with Via 1.7-beta cannot be opened by Via 1.6, due to changes in the file format.

Head over to the Download page to get Via 1.6.1 or Via 1.7-beta.

Via Survey

To learn more about how our users make use of Via, what features they use in MATSim, and what functionality might be missing in Via, we created a short survey.

We would be very thankful if you could take two minutes of your time and fill in the short survey. It will help us to focus the further development of Via on those features that are most useful to you.

Take the survey! It will only take a minute or two!

We've prepared again a video showing some of the new features in Via 1.6. The topics covered in this video:

  • Improved Setup dialog for Networks
  • Displaying link labels
  • Setting link transparencies
  • Intersection Flow analysis

Via 1.6 released

The newest version of Via is now available for download! Via 1.6 comes with a number of great new features and several major improvements:

  • Major improvements to displaying networks: show arbitrary labels next to links, or control the opacity of links separately from the color.
  • Intersection Flows: Find out how many vehicles cross an intersection in what direction. As usual, the analysis is fully time dynamic.
  • Transit Stop Areas: Due to modelling reasons, a single stop often needs to be modelled by several transit stop facilities, making analyses more difficult than they should be. By aggregating multiple stop facilities into one stop area, analyses get much more easy and meaningful!
  • Scripting: A brand new plugin that allows you to automate steps in Via. Easily load data, create layers, set styles and save screenshots fully automated.
  • Presets allow you to restore multiple layer styles along view a view, time and speed. It makes interactive demonstrations much easier as you can prepare several aspects of a model you want to highlight, and quickly jump between the different settings.
  • Legend: Show a legend next to the visualization to explain the different colors and sizes used.

Furthermore, we improved the user interface in many places. Many layers now use similar setup dialogs to set colors, line widths or symbol sizes, making it much easier to navigate around in Via. Large facilities and  point data sets shown in an XY Layer display now significantly faster. And Points showing in an XY Layer can now show their Voronoi-region instead of a point, although there are now also much more symbols available to choose from. Also, many queries like transit stop or car counts have been improved, showing more information with fewer clicks.

Head over to the download and enjoy the new version of Via!

Via 1.5.1 released

We have released Via 1.5.1, a minor release containing some bug fixes. In some circumstances, via-files containing shape files, xy data, or the new WebMap introduced in 1.5.0, could not be loaded. These problems are now fixed in 1.5.1.
